A love letter to Preconstructed Magic

Theme Deck Review Compendium: Nemesis “Turnaround”

And here we are with the last deck from Prophecy, and from the Masques block. 4 blocks, 12 decks in each block… 48 total of these posts. Which is certainly a number. But I’m getting something out of doing this and if anyone else appreciates it then that’s a bonus. Keen to do a bit of stuff which is a bit less archival though for the next couple of posts — will have to have a think of what that looks like — but I’m pretty excited to get into Invasion Block too after a palate cleanser.

Turnaround

A creature based blue white control deck.

So Mageta was quite nice, having a wrath on the table whenever you felt like it, enough said about him, we love him. Glittering Lion and Ribbon Snake are taxable creatures to leave your opponent on their toes, kinda, and all in all just a well rounded deck to make your opponent really consider how they use their mana.

@burlham

Definitely the best theme deck of the set, and probably near the top for the block too. Certainly does a better job of being a WU deck than Tidal Mastery. Other than The Lion nothing is all that exciting – if you’d not played against Rhystic Study before you’d not realise how bonkers it is – but there are very few cards that are bad and everything works well together.

@ReubenAustin

As far as I’m concerned any deck that has a Daze in it is pretty much the top precon deck for it’s block.

The Theme Deck Renaissance

There is also another deck from Prophecy called “Turnaround” that is U/W control that sports some amazing abilities to bounce/counter with some great shenanigans. That probably falls into my second place spot.

Prophecy Turnaround Preconstructed Theme Deck (MTG)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

not the best pre-con, but it has this novlty about it that makes me really like this deck. the ability to tie up your opponent’s mana in your spells and creatures instead of theirs has its charms and uses.

The same Jason with the Slither review? Feels world apart.

Comments:

I started playing with this deck. It’s literaly imposible to win with it. It’s very defensive, and the creatures are incredible weak todo attack.

  1. I enjoy the Rhystic Study and Daze just casually hanging out in this list. I’m sure they could trade stories about salty opponents for ages. Do you pay the 1, LOL?

    1. The interesting thing looking back is how much fairer they are in this context. If you’re returning an island to your hand to counter a Grizzly Bear… the cost/benefit isn’t as clear as it is in more competitive formats.

      From playing with and against Study in the day it was more or less a one sided Sphere of Resistance since it was almost always right to pay the one. But since playing at a Theme Deck / “what we can pull from packs with pocket money” level our games were fairly slow so turning a Bear into a Grey Ogre wasn’t all that crippling. Still a good card, sure, but nothing compared to how it is in Commander.

      In comparison, cards like Spiketail Hatchling, Stronghold Machinist and Trap Runner felt way stronger in this deck. Mine Bearer is a surprising MVP too: that could stop creature decks in their tracks.
