Theme Deck Review Compendium: Urza’s Legacy “Radiant’s Revenge”

I’ve written too much about the one thing already so won’t use my little intro section here to do so again.

Radiant’s Revenge

A white and blue creature based control deck.

The play strategy for “Radiant’s Revenge” is simple: be patient. Your deck contains three artifacts that, if the game lasts long enough, are likely to win it for you: Urza’s Blueprints and two Dragon Bloods. The deck also contains Opportunity, which can give you card advantage late in the game.

nuANCED review: Radiant’s Revenge

So what we got in the end is arguably the most forgettable of the Urza’s Block decks. While certainly not the worst, I think that honour would fall to Tombstone, without having a lynchpin like Radiant it does end up as a bit of a pile of cards. Compare this to the WU deck from Destiny. This shares the same colours, many cards, but has a clearer Aura theme which is nicely anchored by Rayne.

In praise of: Llanowar Elves, by Tim G

While I was playing a White-Blue Urza’s Legacy starter deck called Radiant’s Revenge, with overcosted flyers and control cards I didn’t understand, he was casting huge Wurms and Trolls, which completely trampled over my scrawny drakes and puny clerics.

Technically counts as a review, right? Gotta pad these out somehow given we’re in an Ertai’s Lament drought and Cubic is just starting on Saga. Great post anyway, I really enjoyed it. There was somebody locally who used to collect Llanowar Elves when I started playing so they were impossible to find. He had binders full of them. I think my sole copy was from cracking a Sixth Edition booster pack. I still feel I need to hoard them today, will pick up any I see.

Budget Deckbuilding: Radiant’s Revenge

Honestly, “Radiant’s Revenge” is even more incorrectly named than some of the other decks from the Urza block … when I read “Radiant’s Revenge” I expect a White deck that can hit the opponent. The way “Radiant’s Revenge” is build only really seems to make sense if you want to pay all the Echo costs but fear getting shanked by the opponent because you play so little cards.

As we indicated in our previous post on these theme decks – dang they sucked hard but we loved theme. The 2 rares in this deck are Ring of Gix and Urza’s Blueprints. During all the games we had, the MVC had to be Mother of Runes. The Ring was OK and Urza’s Blueprints would be better perhaps in an EDH build. These theme decks were good but really only for the kitchen table unless you made a major overhaul where one would have a slim chance at a games store with it.

Urza’s Legacy Part 3: Radiant’s Revenge

Most of the individual commons and uncommons rank from ok to pretty decent, but they don’t really make sense together. The deck may have been saved by good rare choices, but those ones certainly weren’t it.
