A love letter to Preconstructed Magic

Theme Deck Review Compendium: Urza’s Saga “Sleeper”

No commentary on this one, just into it!

Sleeper

A white weenie deck which takes advantage of the “sleeping” enchantments which the set introduced.

Official product information webpage (archived)

The archived page from 2013 is a bit more visually interesting.

“Sleeper” is all about speed and pressure. Its speed lies in its many cheap creatures, and pressure comes from the threat of many more.

“Sleeping” enchantments-enchantments that become creatures have lower casting costs than comparable summon spells, but they come with a drawback. You must wait until your opponent plays a creature before yours can enter the fray. Think of these enchantments as a way to slow your opponent down while you build up. If you put down a “sleeper” on the first or second turn. your opponent will be very reluctant to start playing creatures of his or her own. You can then bring out one or two small attackers; if your opponent plays a creature for defence, the rest of your army will awaken.

Note that in the list above sleeping enchantments are grouped in the creatures category as per the guide. I’d normally reorganise these to split out the categories a bit more… but I’ve opted not to in this instance.

nuANCED reviews: Sleeper

This deck is essentially a white weenie deck. The twist is that some of the creatures start as enchantments, and become creatures only when your opponent plays a creature of their own. In theory this adds a bit of nuance as you can use these strategically to try and influence your opponent to delay playing things.

Cubic Creativity

Budget Deckbuilding: Sleeper

Overall, I like the “Sleeper” deck. Sure, there are lots of better cards available nowadays, but the idea works for me and there is lots of room for improvements and tinkering.

Urza’s Saga: Sleeper Review (Part 1 of 2)

The question the deck looks to answer is, what if we built an aggressively-minded White Weenie deck, then layered on some sleeping enchantments to keep the opponent in check? It’s an intriguing prospect.

Urza’s Saga: Sleeper Review (Part 2 of 2)

Hits: Superb twist on the standard WW archetype; great mana curve and base allows for strong starts and looser keeps; deck is ton of fun to play- sleepers feel like minelaying for your opponent

Misses: Sleeper enchantments can let your opponent dictate the pace and course of the game; bad draws can give you too little teeth if your opponent plays around your sleepers

OVERALL SCORE: 4.60/5.00

A pretty impressive rating!

Another thread which is a bit light on actual reviews. Though Cubic Creativity will be finished with Coldsnap in no time, and I might take a look at the Enhanced deck myself too: it’s interesting in that it’s probably the one that diverges from the basic deck the most. For good or ill.

As always I’d invite anyone to share their own thoughts in the comments, or point me towards anything I may have missed.

Edited 28/10/2023: another unboxing vid added.

Edited 18/12/2023: added CC and my bits on the deck. 🙂
