A love letter to Preconstructed Magic

Theme Deck Review Compendium: Mirage “Ride Like The Wind”

Ride Like The Wind

An aggressive red and white deck featuring the flanking combat ability.

Wizards Product information page (archived)

If you like attacking, the “Ride Like the Wind” deck should make you very happy indeed. If you like watching your opponent cringe helplessly at your never-ending, unstoppable onslaught, then so much the better!

The “Ride Like the Wind” deck has a very simple plan: Step 1, play creatures. Step 2, attack with them. Step 3, see step 1. This deck takes full advantage of the flanking ability. Since that ability only works while the creatures that have it are attacking, it’s best to keep them charging at your opponent.

Beats and Skies

Beat and Skies does a bracket: Pool 1, Week 4. Round 1: decks 25 to 32.

Ride Like The Wind is a more creature focused style of deck, themed around creatures with the Flanking combat ability. To take advantage of the offensive nature of the ability, this deck wants to be doing a lot of attacking. Strangely, Wind is also very lacking in the two mana area, and extremely congested in the 3 mana area. Every single one of the 3 mana Knights have activated abilities that cost mana too, which then makes you choose between these and further advancing your board.

Budget Deckbuilding: Ride Like the Wind

Today, we have yet another blast from the past in form of the Mirage Preconstructed Deck “Ride Like the Wind”. This White/Red deck uses Knights as its main theme and since Mirage marks the birthplace of the “Flanking” keyword, there are some blocking shenanigans inbound.

Mirage: Ride Like the Wind Review (Part 1 of 2)

Flanking is one of the set’s defining mechanics, giving its creates a leg up in combat. That is how Ride Like the Windbalances the scale- yes, the bulk of your army are three-mana 2/2’s… but they can kill a 2/2 and live to tell the tale, and can even trade out with a 3/3. By punching above their weight, they set up difficult defnesive situations for your opponent, who much now reassess their defensive strategy. The idea of the deck, then, is a simple one- ride your cavalry to victory through the red zone.

Mirage: Ride Like the Wind Review (Part 2 of 2)

Hits: Exceptionally consistent, largely due to the high number of flank-Knights; very simple, attack-minded strategy and flanking mechanic virtually puts the deck on rails

Misses: Lack of variety gives the deck a note of monotony; removal suite rather lackluster, especially given the colours of the deck

OVERALL SCORE: 4.00/5.00

Magic The Gathering Adventures

[Legacy] Mirage Ride Like the Wind Theme Deck

This is a white-red deck. It is fairly linear. The major not so linear combo in the deck is to enchant a white creature with Favorable Destiny.

I’m not sure what the poster’s angle is, but they did goldfish a few games which could be interesting.

Magic The Gathering: Mirage Theme Deck (MTGO) – Ride Like The Wind

Dude has assembled the deck in paper and it’s a thing of beauty.

I think I’m just going to do these chronologically (from the original set release rather than online dates) so next up will be Visions.

  1. […] Ride Like The Wind is a more creature focused style of deck, themed around creatures with the Flanking combat ability. This was depicted creatively by the creatures having the ability being knights on horseback. When a creature with Flanking is blocked by a creature without Flanking then that blocking creature gets -1/-1 until the end of turn. To take advantage of the offensive nature of the ability, this deck wants to be doing a lot of attacking. Strangely, Wind is also very lacking in the two mana area, and extremely congested in the 3 mana area.
