A love letter to Preconstructed Magic

Theme Deck Review Compendium: Planeshift “Scout”

Managed to put this one together after getting 90% of it with some Invasion era bulk. Always a good time when you’re looking through and you realise you have both rares, and all those basics are all in the right colours too…

Scout

A red, green and white creature based midrange deck.

I think this write up is the same as the one on the website so you can read the missing section there.

Planeshift: Scout Review (Part 1 of 2)

Scout lays a lot of its force on the backs of the Battlemages, including a package of six of them. These form the nucleus of an otherwise more conventional beaters-n-utility-creatures deck.

Planeshift: Scout Review (Part 2 of 2)

Hits: Multi-tool Battlemage theme a hit when it works; solid colour fixing ensures you’ll generally have what you need

Misses: Deck is too inconsistent; a half-dozen Battlemages does not a ‘theme’ make; a gaggle of head-scratching creature inclusions that seem overreliant on your opponent playing the ‘right’ colours (see: Slingshot GoblinAmphibious Kavu); singleton “combo” of Amphibious Kavu/Singe too gimmicky; poor burn suite

FINAL GRADE: 3.25/5.00

Yup had this one as well. 14 year old me starting in magic thought this was a good deck but yeah looking back it looks terrible. The idea behind the deck is to be like the Comeback deck, use gating triggers to bring back battlemages and eldamri’s call to bring out whatever battlemage is needed for the situation. Of course, it doesn’t quite work because there’s nothing like cavern harpy in these colors to form an engine. Also six battlemages is not enough nor are there enough gating creatures. The deck really needed to lose some of the random creatures like stone kavu for at least 3 if not 4 copies of all the battlemages plus a few extra gating creatures.

I think using the off-color kicker of stormscape and thunderscape battlemage is easier than you give it credit for. The mana elves, fertile ground, and lands like geothermal crevice make it easier than it looks to get black or blue mana. There’s only 4 battlemages with off-color abilities while there are 8 cards that can potentially make blue or black mana, so I think its fine. In fact, I think it adds a little bit of depth for new players that they can use fertile ground to get black mana even if there aren’t any swamps in the deck.

Dude usually has some solid things to say. Love it.

While this deck looks fun I think it also suffers from a lack of direction. Eladamri’s Call is a great card it’s a shame it’s not very well implemented in this deck. I almost feel like it should have had more Battlemages. Or maybe some more kicker creatures.

@StarkMaximum

Hey, this is the first precon that makes use of my favorite color combination, my three favorite colors! …That’s all! Nothing much else to say about this one!

Dude is on the same wavelength as me, obviously:

@ReubenAotearoa

The first review I don’t think I’ve got anything to contribute. Oh well, it’s been a good run. Goodbye and good luck!
